Enjoying Gayo Coffee begins with its strong flavor and character. Gayo coffee boasts a flavor that is not bitter with a low acidity and a hint of sweetness. That’s why Gayo coffee is often used as a mixture for various house blend coffees.
Gayo coffee is best planted at an altitude of 1,000 meters above sea level. However, this coffee also has its own uniqueness; the altitude of the plantations determines its flavor. Bergendal is a type of Gayo Arabica coffee. The name Bergendal came from Dutch words “Berg” (mountain) and “Dal” (valley). This low acidity coffee is grown on the Bener Meriah plantation, Aceh, where it sits at 1,200 to 1,500 meters above sea level, having a slightly fruity taste with hints of herbs and spices.
Another Gayo coffee variant, Rambung, has the largest beans among other Arabica coffee grown in the region. Rambung coffee has fast growth and requires more land to plant.
Next we have Sidikalang Coffee. It grows at an altitude of 1,500 meters above sea level, having a long plant life span with proper care and processing.
As part of Gayo Coffee, Lini Ethiopia coffee offers different flavors, depending on where it is grown. However, Lini Ethiopia is basically an Arabica coffee variety that first entered Indonesia in 1928.
This type of Gayo coffee is a cross between Arabica and Robusta coffee, which was originally grown in East Timor. After the 1980s, the East Timor Arabusta was brought to the highlands of Aceh where it was then developed.
